[Writing for Video: Transcript] Writing copy for video? Here are 3 tips to help you write better scripts.
First off, sentence length. Content writers know short and precise sentences are most impactful. Try to cover complex ideas in more compacted paragraphs. By dividing your script into a series of bite-sized paragraphs you also prepare for an easier filming process.
Video scripts are like elevator speeches; you want to express as many precise ideas as you can in as limited amount of time as you can.
Another thing to consider is style and approach of your writing. When writing for video you typically want to write in a more conversational tone. Avoid long narrative language.
A great tip is to read your script out loud to see how it sounds, rather than just relying on your internal voice. Something that sounds natural when someone is reading a blog post does not necessarily work the same when they’re hearing it in a video.
Lastly, think about the priorities of your content. When writing articles things like the headline and sub-headings are really important.
Whereas with video, the focus is typically on your first and last sentence. The first because that’s where it really matters to grab the viewer’s attention, and the last because that’s what you want the viewer to walk away with.
Bonus tip: a general rule of thumb is you can script 130 to 150 words for every minute you want your video to be.
