Are you one of those speakers that talks really fast when you’re giving a presentation? Or maybe you prefer to really slow it down. Maybe you speak fast because you have so many ideas you want to share you want to get them out quickly! And don’t get me wrong, it can be fun listening to someone speak fast. But it can also be exhausting and eventually people will stop listening. Conversely, when you always speak slowly, initially people will be patient, giving you time to make your point… until they lose interest and stop listening.
Today I want to talk about why you’ll delivery a more engaging presentation if you modulate your rate of speech to match your content and meet the needs of your audience. So, before you start rehearsing your delivery, picture in your mind all the parts of your presentation stretched out in front of you. There’s the introduction right in front of you and way at the other end is your conclusion. Your job is to take your audience on a trip through that presentation. And your voice is the vehicle that’s going to carry them along.
You are in complete control of how much your audience enjoys the trip you’re going to be taking them on. Is the trip going to be a high-speed race that gets them there fast, but with no scenery or memorable moments to enjoy along the way. Or is it going to be a beautiful, memorable drive along winding roads with lots of fun bends and curves with the occasional straight away?
So as you’re rehearsing or reading through your script, think about where you can adjust the speed of your delivery to match the different sections of your presentation. Look for opportunities to speed up your delivery… as well as where you can transition back down to a slower pace. For example, if there’s a section where you’re sharing something you’re excited or passionate about… or where you’re trying to convey a sense of urgency… these are opportunities for you to pick up the pace. And sections where you want to stress the significance of what you’re sharing… or it’s a completely new or a particularly complex concept… you can slow down your delivery and speak more deliberately.
By varying the speed of your delivery, you’re not only making your audience’s journey through your presentation more enjoyable, you’re making it more memorable.
