Mental Tips for How to Perform on Camera

Is being able to perform on camera a necessary skill? Well, did you ever have one of those professors in school who would drone on and on and it was almost impossible to pay attention even though your grade depended on it?

Conversely were you ever blessed to have a professor who was super engaging and excitable and maybe even brought in props to explain a theory or told great stories to hammer home a
point. And even though you didn’t love the subject itself that individual made you love going to class that’s what you need to think about and tap into when you’re presenting yourself and your ideas.

The fact is, HOW you say something is just as important as WHAT you say. Being able to perform is an invaluable trait, and especially important when putting your message out in a visual medium.

As video makers, we’re always thinking about coaching on how to appear better on camera but this is something that’s great to keep in mind in general.

Don’t fall into the “Cheesy” trap when trying to perform

When you’re presenting yourself, whether on a zoom call or a pitch meeting, or really any speaking opportunity, don’t get sucked into the mindset of “oh I don’t want to come across as cheesy by being overly enthusiastic.” There is nothing wrong with being enthusiastic! If you don’t look like you’re interested in what you’re talking about, why should anyone else care? And, no you don’t need to be over the top with it, but just ensure you’re being conscious of how you present yourself and work on maintaining a high energy throughout.
